I came from a small town on the Central Coast of California, Cayucos which means canoe in Chumash. There are plenty of waves, sunshine, and room for everyone to enjoy the active lifestyle we all look forward to year round. In the late 70’s my first job was in a dive shop called Al’s Sporting Goods. We were mostly a dive shop, but did have a nice rental quiver for the tourists and locals kids and some surf gear. That is where I got my start in surfing. And it has stuck with me ever since. It was a great job!
Since I have relocated to the Olympic Peninsula, I have had the honor and pleasure to visit some of our pristine beaches and forests. Considering I grew up in an epic place full of sunshine and lots of great waves, which by the way, were a little bit easier to access, (but lots of them still secret,) this area took me by surprise. There were waves here too!! I didn’t believe it at first, but after seeing car after car go by with a board or two on top, I realized I had just moved to heaven.
The beaches here are not just a hop, skip, and jump away. You definitely have to do some work to get there. But once you are there, heaven is at your feet and all around you. It seems that no matter where you are hunting for surf, it is always the same story, the locals want to preserve the secret spots and the adventurers and beach combers want to find and also enjoy the secret spots. So one of Lost Mountain Surf Company’s goals is to try and find a balance somewhere in between.
I have a great respect for our mother earth and believe if we do not tread lightly upon her, we will have very serious consequences to pay in the very near future. Therefore, the secret spots will remain secret with me. However, there are plenty of very stunning beaches that are accessible with ease and are great for camping, surfing, kayaking, diving, kite boarding, fishing, hiking, and beach combing.
Something else that I noticed in the Great North West is that surfing is not the only thing to do around here. We are the home of the Olympic Mountains. There is snow, lakes, mountains, trails, and my least favorite, wind. With all these natural resources, this is a gigantic playground for the extreme sports enthusiast. We have some of the best mountain biking trails, excellent climbing, snow boarding, skiing, surfing, back country exploring. The sky is the limit. Surf in the morning, snow boarding for lunch, and take a hike and soak in the natural mineral springs under the stars and moon light. I honestly don’t think it could get any better than this.
If we all work together to maintain a balance of peace and harmony with these natural wonders we play with, we will be enjoying them for years to come. And so will our children and their children. However, if we in any way abuse these natural resources, we will loose them forever!!! That is where Lost Mountain Surf Company wants to paint a very clear message. Please always keep in your mind, if we abuse it, we may very well lose it. That may apply to many things in your life. So please, tread lightly on our planet and be respectful to your brothers and sisters. You never know when you may need their help.
